Gun Fitting.
Accurate gun fitting combined with a good mount is the key to successful shotgun shooting.
Accurate gun fitting offers advantages no matter what your level of shooting. A novice struggling with an ill fitting gun may pick up bad habits that can be difficult to correct later. A keen shot who practices diligently, may fail to progress if the gun is working against instead of with them.
Your gun fitter and your coach should be part of your team. All working together with the common aim of improving your shooting performance and enjoyment of the sport.
Gunfitting.
There are three main objectives when fitting a gun.
To produce a gun that, when correctly mounted, points where the user believes it to.
To facilitate a comfortable and fluid mount, with the gun coming easily to the cheek and shoulder
To enable the recoil from firing to be absorbed by the shooter in a comfortable and balanced manner.
The two factors that influence where a gun actually points relative to the user's perception of this are; physical build and eyesight. Physical build will influence where the eyes are placed relative to the barrels, and how the gun interacts with the shooter during the firing process. A persons eyesight will affect their perception of the gun's point of aim.
The fit and balance of the gun should be such that the gun is easy to manipulate; should slide smoothly up the front of the shoulder and engage under the cheek bone; allow a comfortable rear hand position; give a clear view of the target, and allow these to be maintained throughout the swing.
The stock should be set to maintain the correct angle at the elbow, thus allowing the arm to absorb some of the recoil by resisting the rearward movement of the gun with the triceps and pectoral muscles. The sole of the butt should match the front surface of the shoulder and thus spread the recoil force evenly across this area.
A correctly fitted gun should feel like an extension of the user, pointing wherever they look and moving as one with them as they concentrate on the target.
